Bad for You?
It seems like every other day, some new fad comes along regarding what you should and shouldn’t eat. Lately gluten is high on that list. What is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye and those grains are found in many foods like pasta, cereal, bread and more.
For people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, eating gluten can cause a myriad of unpleasant and even debilitating symptoms and other issues that can have serious impact on your overall health. For most people however, eating gluten is not a problem. For some reason, many consumers believe that a gluten free diet is healthier than a diet containing gluten.
If you suffer from symptoms related to the consumption of gluten, you should see a doctor to determine if you have celiac disease (which is a hereditary auto immune disorder) or non-celiac gluten sensitivity in order to eat appropriate foods and receive proper treatment. If your doctor determines that you have celiac disease, you should advise your loved ones about whether they may be at risk for the same condition.
The good news is that food manufacturers and processors are producing more gluten free foods allowing those with gluten issues to have a wider variety of choices. Some great restaurants, seeking to provide for diners who are gluten conscious, have gluten free options on their menus.
